Oświęcim – history that must not be forgotten!

Remarks – it is not recommended to visit the camp for children under 14 years of age, due to the drastic nature of exhibits and historical events. It is strictly forbidden to bring large backpacks and bags (max size 30x20x10 cm), flags and metal objects to the camp.

Oswiecim is one of the most important monuments of twentieth-century history – a place that commemorates the greatest evil and cruelty that man can inflict. It is a huge lesson and a warning for future generations – each of us should see Auschwitz and each of us should take care that the tragic story will never happen again.

Auschwitz, the largest Nazi extermination camp established on Polish territory. It is estimated that in 1940-1945 more than one million prisoners died in it. Among them the most were Jews, Poles and Gypsies, but the destruction also affected other nationalities. Visiting the camp involves a visit to both parts:

• KL1 Auschwitz – the original camp, created in the pre-war barracks,
• Birkenau – a place of mass extermination of prisoners where most of the victims were killed, created in the displaced village.

On the site, the museum educator shows around the camp grounds, indicating the most important elements of the camp buildings: the assembly square, barracks, crematoria, kitchens, places of execution and work of prisoners. The moving story is evident thanks to the preserved exhibits – prisoner’s uniform, children’s clothes, everyday objects and suitcases with which they traveled to the camp. In addition to historical facts, we get to know individual stories of the heroism of prisoners, the dramas of separated families, but also the stories of love that was born behind the wires of the camp.

It is possible to extend the trip by the presence of a guide on the route Krakow – Oświęcim. This allows you to deepen your knowledge of the history of the camp and get a broader context for the events that the museum guide will tell you about.
